Italian shoe output shows '90 rebound

MILAN (FNS) -- The Italian footwear industry rebounded from the doldrums in 1990, reported ANCI, the Italian National Footwear Association, though the war in the Persian Gulf put a brake on '91 first-quarter orders and prospects for the year are uncertain.

Following five years of declines in production, exports and sales volume, the Italian shoe industry turned in a positive report card in 1990, said ANCI president Natalino Pancaldi at a press conference on the eve of the MICAM shoe show in Bologna, which began Sunday.

Production for the year grew 3.7 percent in quantity to 422 million pairs, and 6.3 percent in value to 11 trillion lire ($9.16 billion). Exports gained 6.2 percent in quantity and 7.5 percent...
