DALLAS -- Women's footwear revenue at J.C. Penney Co. Inc. broke even in the first quarter ended April 27, a period marked by a 48.3-percent drop in companywide earnings.

"We are doing, at the very least, as well as last year," said Louis Lynn, director of women's shoes for the Dallas-based department store chain. "Breaking even this year in the quarter is a major accomplishment."

Lynn said women's shoes performed more strongly than the women's division, which turned in better results than the overall corporate figures. Men's shoes had a slight first-quarter decrease in "the small one digits," said Jim Falcone, senior men's buyer for dress and casual.
