Nordstrom's Whitacre defines his shoe goal

SEATTLE (FNS) - John Whitacre, the new Nordstrom co-president in charge of footwear, describes his role in supporting the merchandisers and buyers under him in the vernacular of the football offensive tackle he once was: "To clear the way for them to do their job."

Whitacre is one of four long-term Nordstrom executives who share the "Office of the President," which took effect in May.

In a recent interview at Nordstrom's Seattle headquarters, Whitacre told FN the main change in the retailer's shoe operation is that Robert T. Nunn, recently promoted to executive vice president, now oversees all shoe departments. Nunn, who reports to Whitacre, had been in charge of only women's shoes.
