Cherokee shoe unit ends qtr. in black

SUNLAND, Calif. (FNS) - The footwear segment of Cherokee, Inc., posted an operating profit in the first quarter ended Aug. 31 against a year-earlier loss.

Cary Cooper, chief financial officer, said the profit reflects a strategy putting more emphasis on branded footwear than on private label, due to branded footwear's higher margins. The strategy also includes the coordination of footwear colors and styles with the firm's apparel.

Company officials did not release third-quarter footwear operating results, however, Cooper noted footwear order backlogs climbed 50 percent over year-ago levels.
