China prisoner report fuels Bush, Congress showdown. (Chinese prison labor reportedly making shoes for export to the US)

WASHINGTON (FNS) - The Bush administration and Congress appear to be headed towards a showdown over diplomatic cables reporting Chinese prisoners routinely made shoes for export to the U.S., a dispatch allegedly suppressed by the State Department.

Highly informed sources on Capitol Hill said at week's end several members of Congress had received State's approval to read the cables that reportedly detailed how Canton prison inmates were forced to make footwear earmarked for export to the U.S.

U.S. law specifically forbids the importation of any products made by prison labor, although goods made by American prisoners can be sold domestically or exported. Chinese-made footwear now accounts for about half of all pairage imported to the U.S.
