LEICESTER, England -- A new liaison office for British United Shoe Machinery Ltd. has opened in Gunagzhou, China. China, which is the world's largest manufacturer of footwear, is expected to produce 1.5 billion pairs of shoes by 1995. Ian Fyles, one of three managers for the new office, said, "The Guangdong and neighboring province of Fujian are currently experiencing a tremendous economic boon and, as both are also major shoemaking areas, they represent a potentially vast market for anyone with the right product."

Because current production in China is largely dependent on manual operations, there is demand for the high technology shoemaking machines British United Shoe Machinery produces, the firm stated. The firm said it earned 1 million pounds in China...
