Footwear retailers who hoped to see a renewed market enthusiasm for Adidas AG were disappointed when Pentland Industries PLC did not pursue plans of buying shares in the athletic footwear company. These retailers believed that the deal would re-establish Adidas' reputation as one of the top shoemakers in the industry. However, Pentland decided to drop its plan of acquiring 79.95% of the company from Bernard Tapie France SA.
NEW YORK - A summer of growing anticipation surrounding Adidas has turned into an autumn of fallen hopes for many athletic footwear executives and retailers, who said the dashed deal for Pentland to buy Adidas, placed the brand back under a long shadow of uncertainty.
