Brisk footwear sales accounted for majority of overall sales gains enjoyed by Sears, Roebuck and Co.'s Sears Merchandise Group. Strong across-the-board sales were posted by Sear's family footwear and junior apparel departments, as well as its men's, women's, children's and athletics divisions. Sears Merchandise Chmn. and CEO Arthur C. Martinez attributed the gains to improved inventory control, higher commissions and salaries for footwear employees and extended size runs.
CHICAGO (FNS) -- Footwear continues to be a star in the apparel lineup at Sears Merchandise Group with overall sales gains hovering "in the big double-digit territory," chairman and ceo Arthur C. Martinez told FN after parent Sears, Roebuck & Co.'s annual meeting here Thursday.
