Shoe Carnival Inc. had $1 million in net income for the 2d qtr 1994, a 44% decrease from $1.8 million in 1993. Net sales, however, increased 37% to $48.5 million from $35.5 million. Shoe Carnival also opened nine new stores and had $12.1 million in operating expenses for the 2d qtr. Industry analysts think that Shoe Carnival should focus on improving store operations and management rather than on opening new stores.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Shoe Carnival Inc. cited an earlier Easter, a weak aparel retail environment and a "higher than desired mix of private label shoes in the women's category" as reasons for a 44 percent decline in net income on a 37 percent increase in net sales for the second quarter ended July 2.
