Why designers suddenly love footwear.

Top ready-to-wear clothing designers are beginning to expand their designer product lines for the footwear market. Designers such as Nautica and Tommy Hilfiger are teaming with footwear manufacturers to help them develop their designer brands and capture market share. Nautica's designer brand footwear, which was first marketed in 1992, has generated about 70% in annual sales increases. Designer Ralph Lauren and his Ralph Lauren Footwear company began developing designer footwear in 1984.

The lines are drawn. While the big rtw names have profited by putting their signature on everything from eyewear to underwear, most have made only tentative forays into footwear. Until now.
