Sears, Roebuck and Co. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. have both introduced store-brand credit cards in an effort to attract customers. A Sears- MasterCard co-branded card is being tested in sixteen Midwestern markets and will be ready for distribution at the national level in May or June 1997. Wal-Mart has introduced its co-branded MasterCard card in 2,265 stores nationwide.

NEW YORK -- The recent phenomenon of mass merchants offering store-brand credit cards has two giant-sized new entrants: Sears, Roebuck & Co. and Wal-Mart Stores.

Sears is testing a co-branded MasterCard in six unspecified Midwestern markets, while Wal-Mart rolled out a card this month to its 2,265 stores nationwide.
