BBC International infringed on a patent and breached its licensing agreement with inventor Nicholas Rodgers when it began selling lighted shoes it contended did not use Rodgers' design, a federal district court ruled. BBC made L.A. Gear's "LA Lights" shoes with the Rodgers' device it had licensed, but when it made lighted shoes for Meldisco, BBC claims some of Rodgers' microcircuits got used by mistake. The judge awarded $5.2 million in damages because BBC knew the patented devices were getting into the wrong shoes.
