Independent shoe stores reported flat to slightly higher sales during the 1996 holiday season. Retailers in the Southeast and Midwest appeared to fare the best, while sales in the Northeast, Southwest and California were sluggish. Holiday sales jumped 15% at Choozy Shoes in Portsmouth, NH, and 10% at the four locations of Holmes Shoe Store in Morristown, TN. However, sales dropped at Bida Shoes in Miami Beach, FL. The holiday business of several retailers is discussed.
