Some years ago I met an executive from DuPont who was intrigued by my job writing about fashion trends in the shoe industry. He said he had an idea for a story based on the best-selling automobile colors, since DuPont was selling paint finishes to the car industry. He sent me the information and I wrote the story.

I hadn't thought of it in years, until about six months ago when I found myself making some longish car trips around Manhattan. After awhile, I noticed that almost every other car seemed to be a lustrous silver color. Its prevalence was extraordinary: on high-priced imports and volume-priced domestics, on sedans and sports cars, and even pickup trucks. It was everywhere.

Just for the fun of it, I went on the Web to search for DuPont and car...
