LOS ANGELES -- Pony is bringing Mecca along for the ride.

Santa Barbara, Calif.-based Global Brand Marketing Inc. said last week it plans to fold its Mecca brand, which it licenses from apparel firm Akademiks, into the Pony stable under the new label, Mecca by Pony.

In an interview with Footwear News, GBMI CEO Killick Datta said the move to reorganize the Mecca brand was propelled by both Pony's success as a footwear brand and a feeling that the two labels were competing with one another at retail.

"Pony has been a phenomenal success, but we felt that there was a slight overlap with [Mecca and] Pony," he said. "I didn't want a situation where the stores were put in a position of choosing between Pony and Mecca. That just didn't make sense...
