This spring, industry bible Advertising Age heralded the death of advertising as we know it. Longtime columnist Bob Garfield's opus, "The Chaos Scenario," explored a not-so-distant future in which traditional marketing would become all but obsolete -- and ad profits would fizzle along with it.

Marketers today are being forced to tread increasingly unstable terrain, thanks to a host of new technologies and phenomena, including digital video recorders, video on demand, wireless digital, podcasting and peer-to-peer content in the form of blogs and vlogs. On top of that, they are fighting against the increased penetration of mobile communications and entertainment technologies such as Ipods, Blackberrys and PSPs.
