NEW YORK -- It was a rough week for several major footwear firms.

Jones Apparel Group and Kenneth Cole both reported weak third quarter earnings last week on slow sales.

In the meantime, Skechers and Timberland reported solid gains, but a lower-than-expected earnings forecast for the fourth quarter. As a result, both companies' stocks fell sharply in Thursday trading. Skechers' weak forecast prompted a heavy drop-off in its stock price. Timberland, too, saw its shares slide on weak U.S. sales and a sluggish forecast.
