Summertime is putting people in the mood for sandals - but not traditional beach styles.

As consumers gear up for outdoor activities such as hiking and paddling, they are searching for sandals that can handle extreme conditions.

"Overall, today's sandals are designed to do more than just be casual flip-flops," said John Reuter, sales associate for Ketchum, Idaho-based The Elephant's Perch. "They often feature a boot-like sole or a toe cover, such as the Keen sandals."

Though still early in the season, outdoor specialty retailers said performance styles from Keen, Chaco, Teva and Merrell already are all brisk sellers.
