Nordic walking is making strides in the U.S.
The outdoor fitness craze - walking with modified ski poles - started in Finland in the late 1990s, when cross-country skiers needed an off-season training activity. Now, several outdoor and athletic vendors are sliding into Nordic walking-specific footwear in the States.
Reebok, for one, is trying to bolster the sport here. The Canton, Mass.-based company partnered with Nordic pole company Exel, based in Burlington, Vt., to target specialty shops with category-specific shoes and poles. The two brands will also, for the first time, exhibit in the same booth at this summer's Outdoor Retailer trade show.
