Rotary UPS offers 12 sec batteryless ride through. (Products & Software).(SatCon Power Systems)(Brief Article)

Control Engineering, March, 2002

Anaheim, Calif.--Starsine rotary uninterruptible power supply (Rotary UPS) provides up to 12 sec flywheel ride through for power line disturbances and short-term outages. It consists of an induction motor/generator (IMG) that works with a surge-limiting line reactor; electronic control package; low-speed flywheel; standby diesel engine; and switchgear for linking to a utility feeder. Normally, the frequency-injected exciter runs the IMG as a motor, regulating flywheel speed to 1,800 rpm. In case of a power disturbance, Starsine is disconnected form the line, and flywheel energy drives the IMG in generator mode to provide the load with UPS. If the fault lasts over 2 sec, flywheel power provides ride through until the standby engine comes up to speed to power the load....
