People visiting Portugal for the first time may be excused for harboring some odd and rather condescending notions: for one thing, the condescending visitor may feel, people seem to speak Spanish with a rather peculiar accent; and, for another, the Portuguese appear to have a rather exotic taste--things tend to look rather more flamboyant than seems absolutely necessary.
Admittedly, there is a smidgeon of truth in these condescensions. But there are things to be seen in this extraordinary country that can teach designers a few lessons not easily picked up in less exotic climes.
