It wasn't all Mizner. Although roughly half this book is devoted to the archetypical Palm Beach houses designed by Addison Mizner, there is also work by Carrere & Hastings, Joseph Urban, Maurice Fatio, Marion Sims Wyeth and others. Many of the houses are spectacular, the photography by Roberto Schezen is handsome, and the book's layouts by Massimo Vignelli are elegant.

There is also an entertaining, graceful and informative introduction by Robert A. M. Stern. These high standards don't prevail throughout, unfortunately: after Stern's essay, the text focuses more on the houses' owners than on the houses themselves, feeble captions tell of dining rooms "set for a sumptuous repast," there are no floor plans and no index. Although not as useful a book as it might have...
