Larry Pond, founder and first chairman of the Design Industries Foundation for AIDS, died on October 9th in New York after a long battle with AIDS. He was 42 years old. Born in Indianapolis, Pond was a graduate of the University of Indiana. His various positions within the design industry included director of marketing and sales for Herman Miller of Canada, vice president of the design firm Environmental Planning and Research in San Francisco, and senior vice president of Stendig International.
In 1984, responding to the growing number of AIDS cases in the interior design community, he and fabric designer Pat Green mobilized industry friends by forming a small group to assist those in need. That organization, DIFFA, has grown to embrace all the design disciplines,...
