A uniformity of materials and reduction to essentials form a minimal bathroom in Bel Air.

For the bathroom in a renovated Bel Air, CA, '50s ranch house, designer David Hertz wanted to use a minimal palette of materials to evoke the simple ritualistic aspects of bathing. Using a building product called Syndecrete that he developed and fabricates through his company, Syndesis, the designer custom made the bathtub, shower base and back wall, floors, vanity countertop and window. The pre-cast material is a cement-based composite of minerals and recycled materials without resins or polymers. Hertz describes the finish as a cross between stone and cement, with the smooth texture and visual appeal--but not the cold feel--of stone.
