OGC's WMS becomes an international standard.(Community bits: company and people updates)

Geospatial Solutions, January, 2005

The International Standards Organization (ISO) has approved the OpenGIS Web Map Service (WMS) interface specification as an international standard. Developed by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and ISO technical committee, the WMS standard--now also known as ISO 19128--specifies protocols that provide HTML (hypertext markup language) clients with uniform access to maps rendered by WMS-enabled Internet map servers.

Software complying with the specification enables automatic overlay of map images obtained from multiple map servers, regardless of scale, projection, coordinate system, or storage format.
