A generation ago, affluent New York City parents met their children's wardrobe needs by shopping at a select group of better grade stores. Generally it was Brooks Brothers for boys, Bergdorf Goodman for girls, and Lord & Taylor, Saks Fifth Avenue or Bloomingdale's for both genders. Retailing has undergone a seismic shift since then.

The Gap has democratized fashion, Donald and Ivana Trump were spotted in Kmart before their divorce several years ago, and no one is ashamed to visit a factory outlet. Today's Park Avenue more is just as likely to be found cruising Baby Gap as she is the luxurious baby boutique at Barneys New York on Madison Avenue.
