Baby boomers are fueling yet another trend--an expansion into outdoor living spaces and gardening. Perhaps as a result, 8% of home accent store retailers polled in the Home Accents Today 2002 Retail Survey plan to add garden decorative products and furniture. Over half of these retailers responded that they carry garden decoratives and furniture with a median of five lines carried and a median price of $50.

The garden category is credited by 12% of home accent store retailers as having the best profit margin. Thirteen percent of gift stores named garden as a sales volume leader with 13% also finding it to be the product with the best profit margin. As with home accent retailers, 8% of gift stores planned to add garden products to their mix in 2002.
