Opposition member of parliament Marc Verwilghen is seen by many as the next prime minister of Belgium. His rise in popularity is due to the televised proceedings of the investigations into the series of pedophile murders and kidnappings. His being a lawyer without connections with the judiciary in Liege was the key factor in his being chosen to chair the investigative commission. The investigations revealed several deficiencies in the police forces.
