Lars-Erik Nelson was a most uncommon columnist and reporter. His death on November 20 at age 59, from a stroke suffered while he was watching television at home in Bethesda, Maryland, stunned and saddened colleagues and politicians alike. A former foreign correspondent for Reuters and diplomatic correspondent for Newsweek, Nelson spent almost 20 years at New York's Daily News, the last 17 as a thrice-weekly Washington columnist
