This year, the American Society of Newspaper Editors announced the percentage of minority journalists working at daily papers fell from 2000 to 2001-the first decline in 23 years. Such setbacks are what the Chips Quinn Scholars Program, sponsored by the Freedom Forum, is trying to prevent.

The program places minority student journalists and recent college graduates in editing, reporting and art internships at newspapers across the country.
