The year 1992 saw the publication of these two broad-gauged, but also conceptual, works on the arms trade, which together improve the state of the literature on that subject, after a lengthy hiatus that had seen numerous works with a narrower focus. Neither Krause nor Laurance claim to provide a theory" of or for the arms trade. But both seek to provide virtually all-inclusive frameworks for analysis in emphasizing a longer-range historical perspective - in Krause's case extending back to the fifteenth century, in Laurance's, back to the interwar period.
