Patrick Chabal, Reader in History and Politics of Africa at King's College, University of London, states at the outset that it is "an old fashioned book" aimed at stimulating a "debate about the interpretation of politics in post-colonial Africa. His basic assumption is that today Africa is in crisis; it suffers from astronomical debt problems, corruption is widespread, development has been stifled and that a large number of people suffer as a consequence.
