This volume is composed of 18 essays by Continental and Anglo-American authors; most were written for the volume. All appear for the first time in English, and those that have appeared before are not readily available even to those readers who have the necessary language skills. The translations read smoothly. With very few exceptions, the essays are of excellent quality, morally and philosophically serious.
