The choice between politics and markets is a recurring concern of political scientists. In recent years, that choice has become more complicated, due to the emergence of a strong third sector--the nonprofit sector. There are now over 1.2 million nonprofits in the United States, and nonprofits account for 10% of our nation's workforce. In belated recognition of these facts, scholars from various disciplines are beginning to take nonprofits seriously.
