The Ranney index has often been used to determine the extent of the electoral competition in American states. This indicator considers the proportion of seats won in Congressional and Senatorial elections, the Democratic percentage in the gubernatorial election and the percentage of the time the governorship and state legislature were controlled by the Democratic party. However, electoral competition can also be determined by using the district-level indicator. This indicator was found to be more reliable than the Raney index.
