Politicians run for reelection and seek higher office when they are provided with an opportunity to do so. Contrary to popular belief, age has nothing to do with a politician's decision to run for reelection or retire. In the case of US congressmen, career decisions are determined by certain variables such as salary, leadership position and ideological location in the party caucus. These politicians run for reelection and seek higher office when they feel that circumstances favor them eventhough some people may consider them too old for the position.
