Norwegian party politics is characterized by coalition avoidance brought about by both policy pursuit and institutional constraint. The political situation in the country is unique, since the coalition avoidance that prevails does not put the government in jeopardy. The left-right dimension of political rivalry remains and the core party extends a considerable influence on government decisions. This way, the status quo is maintained.
