The USSR, when it still existed, prided itself on knowing where it was going: forward and toward a radiant future. That faith has not survived the transition to postcommunist rule. Instead, there is the trauma of loss of empire and of a coequal place in the world order; the shock of adjustment to unemployment, rising prices, and the other attributes of capitalism; and the emergence of social problems like organised crime on a scale that now exceeds that in the West.
