As a labor organizer in California from the mid-1970s to the late 1980s, I experienced personally some of both the highs and the lows of the history of working people that are recounted in this superb new anthology. In 1975 when the state legislature passed the first labor law in the country to cover agricultural workers, I was a full-time volunteer organizer with the United Farm Workers Union, whose ten years of strikes and boycotts had led to this historic event.
