Jean Jacques Rousseau originated the counter-Enlightenment with his effort to revive and transform Christianity and it was during this period that the critique of Christianity reached its zenith. But paradoxically, Rousseau's pursuit of the rationale for the Enlightenment criticism of Christianity, which is the restoration of human wholeness, provided the basis for the attack on secular rationalism. This in turn led to the proposal of a return to a religion that was rooted in sincerity and that aimed to fulfill the humanistic goal of the Enlightenment.
