Writing on Chinese politics is a tricky business. Events have a way of changing just in time to shatter the argument of a new book. The military exercises in the Taiwan Straits by the People's Republic of China (PRC) in December 1995 and March 1996 have not completely undermined Gu Weiqun's detailed comparative analysis of Chinese and Korean struggles over divided nationhood, but they certainly demand a reconsideration of the observation that "the level of conflict in the Chinese case has decreased over time in a continuous linear fashion" ...
