Recent trials have increasingly illustrated the disturbing gap between the highly technical scientific evidence used in the courtroom and the inability of jurors to comprehend the nature of this testimony. Yet, because jury duty is seen as both a right and an obligation of citizenship, the issue is seen as an affront to democratic inclusion and can be raised only with a certain degree of trepidation.
