Sandler O'Neill & Partners' West Coast Financial Services Conference carried tremendous symbolic value. Badly hit in the tragedy of September 11 -- its rebuilding was the focus of a Fortune January cover story -- the firm's amazing rebound is by no means mere happenstance.
Facing the future, the firm set three goals: do everything they can to help families of the victims, rebuild business, and focus on their clients. Putting on the financial services conference was a large part of their goals.
Regional bank analyst Gerry Cronin found the mood at the conference to be "surprisingly bullish." Most remarkable to him were the bicoastal panel discussions: the New York Metropolitan Banking Panel and the Pacific Northwest Banking Panel.
