People expecting Texas-style ostentatious attitudes from the research department of Sanders Morris Harris Group are in for a surprise. Research Director John Olson calls the Sanders Morris Harris Group a conservative and low-profile outfit. "We have not been marching around with a high school band behind us," he says.

Still, in 10 years the firm has grown from a private equity private placement operation into the largest regional investment bank in the Southwest. Olson says the research department follows a pragmatic philosophy emphasizing value but that it is also on the lookout for growth and momentum stocks.
