Journal of Electronic Defense, July, 2004

On June 14, the governments of Sweden and the Czech Republic signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the latter to lease 14 (12 single-seat and two two-seat) Saab JAS 39 C/D Gripen fighters for a period of 10 years (2005-2015). The Czech Republic initially selected the Gripen in December 2003, subsequently initiating negotiations with Sweden to lease fighters intended for the Swedish Air Force instead of buying them outright.

The Czech Republic will be the first NATO country to operate the Gripen. The total value of the contract is approximately $750 million.
