The Los Angeles City Council has voted to ban plastic carry-out bags in the city's supermarkets and other stores by July 2010 if the state fails to impose a 25 cents fee on every shopper who requests one, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times. Save the Plastic Bag Coalition, an industry group, has challenged the plan in court.
