Survey finds supers know how to take care of customers

MMR,  August 25, 2008

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The supermarket industry is perceived as doing a good job taking care of its customers, according to a telephone survey conducted by Harris Interactive.

Every year the Harris Poll measures public attitudes regarding 20 different industries. Specifically, people are asked whether they think each industry is doing a good job or a bad job serving their customers.

Supermarkets continue to get better scores than any other industry. This year 90% of adults said they think supermarkets do a good job, and only 6% think they do a bad job, giving the industry a net positive score of 84.

Other industries with good reputations include online search engines (with a net positive score of 65), computer hardware companies (64), computer software companies (59), hospitals (53) and Internet service providers (52).

At the bottom of this year's list were tobacco companies (-43), oil companies (-32), managed care companies (-14) and health insurance companies (-9).

Airlines and pharmaceutical companies also have seen major declines in their reputations since the survey was first conducted in 1997.
