SALISBURY, N.C. -- Of the 1,300 grocery stores in the country that are certified as Energy Star buildings by the Environmental Protection Agency, more than haft operate under the Food Lion banner.

Commercial buildings that earn the Energy Star use an average of 35 percent less energy and release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than typical buildings. Food Lion Inc. has 703 Energy Star buildings.

"Energy conservation has always been a key goal for Food Lion," says vice president of store development Kyle Mitchell. "We proudly lead the way with energy-conservation initiatives that encourage other companies to conserve energy, too."

Food Lion employs numerous methods to conserve energy, including demand-control systems, automated lights, and energy-efficient fixtures and bulbs.
