Nokia Networks leverages MES at lean plants.(Execution Efficiency As Lean)

Factory-floor data collection is seen by some as contrary to the lean philosophy of using simple visual cues to drive production. But in a broader view of lean centered on waste reduction, better factory-floor data delivers results for Nokia. The Espoo, Finland-based company is a leader in mobile communications products, including network infrastructure equipment from its Nokia Networks business.

Nokia Networks uses a manufacturing execution system (MES) at multiple "lean" plants. These plants are considered lean for a couple of reasons, according to Antti Miettunen, senior project manager responsible for MES at Nokia Networks. First, says Miettunen, they're focused on product assembly and test, and don't have a broad range of supporting functions...
