I didn't want to like the 1999 Ford Explorer. It is, after all, a sport-utility vehicle - a member of an increasingly congested market segment that amazes me. In the end, however, I couldn't resist. It was the sense of power towering over other vehicles combined with the smooth carlike handling that did me in.
